What this place is

A piece of Kyoto you can put on your own table: Nishijin Textile Center’s handweaving session produces a small cloth, roughly 20 × 30 cm, to take home. You work on a mini handloom for about 40 minutes. That gives a visit a clear focus: making something yourself while seeing the craft behind the district’s textiles.

The wider center puts that small project in context. Exhibits trace silk production from silkworms to dyed thread, while artisan demonstrations show traditional looms at work. Japan’s Tourism Agency connects the displays to Nishijin’s centuries of textile-making and Kyoto culture since the Heian period. Leave time around the workshop to look at those exhibits; entry to the center is free. The shop also carries textile accessories, neckties and handbags.

This is a manageable craft stop in Kamigyo Ward, about ten minutes on foot from Imadegawa subway station. It suits travelers who want a short, tangible introduction to weaving, with their finished cloth as the reminder.

The center presents Nishijin textile heritage and its role in Kyoto culture since the Heian period (794–1185); this describes the craft’s history, not the building’s age. A short, paid mini-loom weaving experience within a larger textile exhibition and shopping center. Finished cloths can be taken home. Ratings shown describe the entire center; a workshop-only specialist score has not been verified.

Why this place, specifically

Book the weaving session before you go, and wait for the center’s acceptance reply: submitting the English form alone does not secure a place. For a next-day visit, call during 10:00–16:00. English or Chinese assistance depends on staffing, so confirm your session’s language. Autumn visitors should also check the dated prices: both adult and student fees rise on October 1, 2026.

Open 10:00–17:00 Apr–Sep; 10:00–16:00 Oct–Mar. Normally closed Mondays (Tuesday after a Monday holiday) and Dec 29–Jan 3. September 2026 exception: open Sep 20–23, closed Sep 24.
Public price band
